Final Essay

(Reaction Essay)

Beauty Knows No Age, Race, or Countries!

For centuries, beauty standards have been undeniably media-centric. Such narrow criteria are difficult for anyone to achieve, but can be particularly alienating to women of color. For example, bright complexion, huge blue eyes, and straight nose are part of the beauty standard set by media and it affects both men and women to believe that beauty is based on set criteria. Also, we can commonly see the photos of flawless body and complexion of celebrities on a magazine, and a lot of women are obsessed over getting such fabricated and unattainable image of perfection. Eventually, that leads to low self-esteem and even worse some consider changing some parts of their face and body through surgery.

But is beauty really something that is confined by standard? Just because every little detail about someone's complexion matches that of what media defines beauty as, is that someone more beautiful than any other person in the world? If you answered yes, take a look at these two photos below. Both of the women in each picture are not white, have fair complexion, nor presented in their best selves. They are not dressed in fancy clothes, they are not posing on the runway, and most of all, both photos are taken naturally without perfectly set background or poses. However, as soon as you look at these women, would you call them not beautiful? Would you judge them for some of the flaws that are shown on the face? In most honest responses, the answer would be no. In fact, we would find ourselves not paying that much attention to the details, but the whole image the details create when they are combined. In other words, we feel the atmosphere that comes out from the image and the women, not the single details.

In the first photo, a woman with unwashed powdered face is beaming presumably at a market selling leaves. Her clothing is casual, and she has no makeup on her face. By looking at this woman, we can feel her happiness and her smile seems to give out positive energy. Unless we are a beauty pageant judges, we barely notice anything about her skin color, eyebrow shape, and whether or not she is stylish. What makes this photo/this woman beautiful is the sincerity. There is no pretention and her smile seems genuine. Would she look more beautiful and shinier if her photo was photoshopped to look exactly like those in a cover magazine? Maybe, from media's perspective, but that would take away her own charm, what she has that makes her who she is.

Same can be sensed from the second photo. Unlike the woman in the first photo, the second woman isn't smiling. However, that doesn't make this young lady look less beautiful if not ugly. There seems to be sadness flickering across her face like a shadow, and she is true to her feelings rather than faking a smile. She doesn't have white complexion, she doesn't have colored eyes, and she doesn't seem fit. But that's probably not the first part about this photo that will grasp your eyes and heart. The fact that she presumably is a Native American and how natural her posture and facial expression are what you will get to notice first. Nobody will think, "She is way out of beauty range," but get to appreciate the sincerity and naturalness the photo of this woman has. I'm not trying to say you must think these two ladies in the photos are beautiful. What I'm trying to say is, after looking at these photos at a glance, we rarely notice the flaws of one's complexion and body. Rather, we are unconsciously driven by the whole image and vibe the person effortlessly and inevitably shows, not the perfection of a single body part.

That's why we shouldn't be insecure about the things that make us different. Maybe your nose is a little crooked, maybe you don't have the longest legs, and maybe you have freckles. But it isn't that little intricate things that are important; it is how those little things harmonize and make us who we are and how we look that set us apart from every other random girls on the media that look exactly the same. Beauty is diversity. Everybody is beautiful in their own way, and maybe we don't fit media's beauty criteria, but so what? That doesn't marginalize us and we are still who we are. Beauty is racially and geographically, and even individually, diverse, and trying to align with stereotypically Western standard of beauty has to stop. Furthermore, it's important to emphasize that outer beauty should not be a determining factor of women's worth in the first place. We must continue to advocate for a society where women's intelligence, humor and capacity for empathy are held in higher regard than their appearance. After all, beauty is what comes from within, and it is that energy and vibe that influences how we look on the outside.

Bae Young Ha/Diffent two sisters/Thursday 56

Different two sisters – the final

Children are honest expressing their emotions. So there's always integrity when I look at the pictures of children. A Mood of a photo of children is determined by color, their facial expressions, background, and even the clothes they put on. I was given two photos of two children each. Each photo commonly shows two girls standing close together but there are also dissimilarities in their facial expressions and the mood.

In the left photo, you can see two girls standing on the soil. They look like they are from south-east Asia considering the color of their faces. In the background there's no buildings that stand for modernization and all we can see is a boundless plain. Compositionally this photo implies diagonal line rising from right to left. Wooden posts at the back and shadows are creating diagonal lines that contributes to asymmetry. The most important factor that creates the mood in this photo involves subject matters' gaze and facial expressions. They gives scared and terrified look which form gloomy mood with the background and their skin color altogether.

There are also two girls in the right photo, standing on the brick ground right in front of a building. They are white. Compositionally it also implies a diagonal line as well, but in this case, the line rises from left to right. Their different heights and shadows contributes to this diagonal line. Most importantly their smiles creates bright and peaceful mood. They are wearing clothes that has no decoration and it makes them look tidy and not poor.

The starkest difference between the pictures involves subject matters' gaze. You can easily catch their gazes because they are too obvious to ignore. In the left picture girls look scared and frightened but in contrast girls in the right picture shows warm smiles. Backgrounds creates different moods too. Plain and wooden posts standing with some intervals contributes to a desolate and gloomy mood.

Two girls are standing straight in both pictures. They both implies a diagonal line. But girls in the left one looks scared while those in the right one looks happy and peaceful. Backgrounds contributes to different moods too. I can feel a desolate mood in the left one and a modern and tidy mood in the right. Yet both are focusing on the children and we can guess their feeling by their gazes.

Reflection on the presentation

As the professor has pointed out throughout the whole semester, the presentation also include the things we have to consider when we write. Writings should be more specific and detailed. And also we need to put examples properly.

Infering Pictures' Situation

PicturePicture

Photographs which seem similar can infer totally different situations. Emotional and background details in pictures have people seeing them discern what is going on, how the moods are. Here are two similar but different photographs. First, the left one is putting in two small young girls and its film is black and white. The other one on the right is also a black and white photo of another two little young girls. In both, the girls are all standing and placed on the center but the facial expression, details they are showing like hair and feet, and the background differ enough to infer totally contrast situations.

In the first photograph, two tiny young girls are standing on a bleak land consisting of only sand. They look so scared and afraid because they are making a long face and staring at something. And their poses are not natural and voluntary. The left one is wrapping something white on her left hand and the other is putting her hands backward. And also one is wearing shoes and the other is not. It means the one whose feet are naked had no shoes to wear. Their hair is also not neat and clean. It looks as if they could not wash. And also the background in this picture suggests that the situation is bad and miserable because the place, on which the two girls are standing, is totally jejune. It only has sand and some sticks looking like wood without any branches. The two are also likely to be there without their own will. By things like that, the whole mood we can feel from this picture is sad and regretful.

In the other picture, two tiny young girls are also standing. They look so happy and amused because they are smiling and bright and they are just looking at the camera without any fear. Due to the fact they look happy and enjoying, although their poses are not really different from those in the first picture, it looks like they are just putting their hands back to take a picture. Their hair and clothes are so clean that they don't look poor and out of care. Although they are not wearing shoes, the brick-paved ground tells us that they are just taking a picture while they play around their hometown. The wall behind them is also usual one which town or country dwelling people can easily see. So the round and the wall are insinuating that they are in a safe place and they are not standing there by force but by their will. The details like that are clear enough to let us know that the mood in this picture is peaceful and positive.

Now that the details and backgrounds of are explored enough it became crystal clear to contrast the two pictures. The girls in the first picture look unhappy and scared, their feet say that they are standing there forcibly, the dirty hair says that they are out of care and poor. The background is also arid and seems inappropriate for children. The total visual clues in the first picture bring the people seeing it an idea that the situation is as if they lost their house or they are on violation. The other is on the contrary. The girls are rather happy and bright. They are willingly taking a picture and the poses are also their own ones. The background is just usual. It looks like the two girls are in their town and they just are just taking a photo while they hang around their house. So, in contrast to the details in the first one, those in this picture implies that the situation is very peaceful and just ordinary life.

In my conclusion, two pairs of two girls are depicted in two pictures. They are ,at the first glance, similar but totally different. The girls in two pictures show totally differing clues like clean and dirty hair, afraid facial expression and happy one and also the backgrounds are telling that the two are totally different. So it is clear that all the details in the pictures infer contrast situations. Seeing the pictures and inferring what is going on and how the moods are so interesting and a real fun in pictures.

201200440 Minji Kim Final essay

Importance of the face

If you want to take the pictures of people, who is the best model to you? Someone who has a remarkable sense of fashion or who has characterful belongings could be the popular target to the photographer. However, if you see the two pictures here, there are no fancy items, but the impression of pictures are strong. The children in the left picture are Pima Indian, and the children in the right picture are the Victorians. Although both pictures are simple, both photographs display the facial expressions of the subjects which draw the observer's attention.

In the left picture, two Pima Indian children are standing side by side. The girl on the left seems fold her hands behind her back. She has hair tangled for want of combing and look unkindly at camera. The girl next to her also shows uncomfortable expression. The differences are that her hair is more neat and hold something in her right hand. She also wears shoes. There are tree looking columns are in the background but the atmosphere of the picture is like the wasteland.

The girls in the right picture are posing like left pictures. However, Victorian children seems more joyful than Pima Indian children. Even they are bare foot, they are smiling. The taller girl wears hair band with ribbon and shorter girl tie some of her hairs. They might be living in a town because the background shows the brick wall and road.

Both pictures shows the children with similar posing. The Pima child shows uncomfortable expressions to us but they don't make us angry at them. Rather, observers become concerning about the girl's barefoot and the hollow background. The picture of the children tell us the poor circumstances of their life. It's same in right picture. The smiling faces of the girls make the picture more comfortable than the left picture, but the bare feet and the old clothes tell us the poor situation.

Photographers all want to take great portrait. The best way of delivering the messages of photographers are the target's face. Here, there is no fancy cars or beautiful backgrounds, but observers are impressed by the children's faces and the mood. Therefore, if you want to take a good picture and deliver the message, targeting the people's face is the nice way.

The face of the little girls

Everybody has different memory of their childhood. Some may remember it as valuable moment with full of happiness and brightness, while others remember it as miserable and lonely days. Here are two photographs of two girls. Both pictures are black-and-white pictures which seem like to have been taken long time ago. In these photos, two young girls standing straight and staring at front in the same way. However the tone and mood of the pictures are somewhat different.

The left picture was taken in the bleak and desolate area. It seems like a little town in a desert which is far from the major city. The center of the focus is two girls wearing shabby dress. Because of the barren and dreary background, two girls appear worn and isolated. And also both of them are frowning with the expression of dissatisfaction. The left side girl is glaring at front with raised eyes. The right side girl is watching something with a little bit of fear. Perhaps they do not like the situation or moment they are faced with.

In the right picture, two girls are in front of the old wall with standing barefoot on the street. It seems like a small country town or maybe slums. From what they are wearing and their bare foot, they are not well cared children in a wealthy family. However they are not look like miserable. Rather, the girls are happy enough. They are looking at the camera with the brightest smile in the world. And they seem like sisters as their pretty smile looks alike.

Two different kinds of children are depicted in these two pictures. In the left picture, overall impression is loneliness and grief. As two girls look so unhappy and miserable, we strongly feel some uneasiness just by watching it. The other picture gives a sense of calmness and stillness. However we can also feel active and light mood in two girls' face. We smile along with the girls as their expressions are so naïve and immaculate. Although both of them focus on little cute girls, one is more bright and mellow than the other.

There is a saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words." Just one shot of photo can deliver diverse meanings and feelings. The two paintings show comparison between sad faces and the hopeful faces. From these two faces, we can guess the figures' social backgrounds or psychological conditions. It is the power of the pictrue. And also, all of us would respond differently to the same faces as our personal experience and feelings.

201302308 Dooseok Lee / Impact of Young Faces on Pictures / Thurs 56

Did you know that children rarely hide or conceal their feelings? Therefore, faces and expressions they make mostly leads to their true feelings. Therefore, faces of young children are the most important factors in determining the mood of the picture. These pictures show pairs of young girls at a similar age. Because faces children make comes from their real feelings, it makes people wonder what made girls feel so different.

In the first picture, two young girls are making serious faces. They seem to be dissatisfied on something. Clothes they are wearing feels weary and exotic at the same time. Judging from their hair and faces, it seems that they haven't had a shower for a while. Also, the girl on the right has white dressing on her hand, which can mean injury. The bright sunlight is shining upon these girls, and behind them, objects assumed dead trees are standing. The moods these trees and faces of girls make are a sad and calm.

In the second picture, just like the first picture, two young girls are standing side by side. They are making brightest smiles as if they are living a happy life. Assuming they have similar looks and one girl is taller than the other, they might be sisters. They are standing in front of the wall made of bricks. Even though they are bare footed and wearing unwashed clothes,  their faces and hair look well washed. The bright faces they make and bright sunlight makes the mood of the picture warm and peaceful.

The first picture and the second one have many things in common. Two girls are standing side by side, and the bright sunlight is shining upon them. Also, they are staring right through the camera, and they are both wearing weary clothes. But the moods and impressions that these two pictures give are totally different. What made these differences? Faces they make is the answer for the question. Sad and unsatisfied faces girls make in the first picture is the major determinant on sad mood

In conclusion, we can find out that when young children appear in pictures, the faces and impressions they make are very important in deciding the mood of pictures. It is interesting that just making different faces can make different mood of the pictures.

201200018 Dong Yi Kang / Exam Essay / Thurs 5-6

201200018 강동이 Dong Yi Kang

The two photographs are similar in nature – they are black-and-white photographs depicting two girls standing. However, they seem to be utterly different with a closer look- the background, the girls' attires, the girls' facial expressions and the overall atmosphere.  With the same subject, the two photographs emit totally different emotions and atmospheres, hinting things about themselves.

The first photo depicts girls about ages 3 to 5. Looking closely at the two girls' expression, they seem fearful, or uncomfortable. Perhaps they are not used to the act of being photographed. The small numbers in the left bottom corner hints that the photograph may be a historical record of an exhibition or something similar. The girls have matted hair that do not look as if they have been combed for a long time, and their faces are dirtied with dirt. Their garments seem unnatural, as if they are wearing something that do not belong to them, or as if they are wearing something that were not made for them, but secondhand clothing. Looking closely at the background reveals erect sticks. They are blurred, so we do not know for sure what they are. They may be cactuses, or they may be fences for livestock. The ground seems arid, without a hint of rain. The background hints at where this picture was taken. In the background, what is visible is flat land without any trees, and some buildings in the vicinity. The geographical feature is much like that of the American West, where there are prairies and deserts for miles that it is possible to actually see the horizon. The two girls may be American Indians, or the children of the settlers of the wild west, or the children of the plantation workers, who are not purely Caucasians, by the look of their faces.

The second paragraph depicts barefooted girls again this time. However, their appearances and the background differ from the first picture. First of all, looking at their background, it is easily noticeable that they are standing on neatly-laid pavements. Though the bricks seem rough, the building behind them seems pretty modern. Another clearly visible thing is their facial expression. They are smiling with ease at the camera. Though the smaller girl seem awkward standing before the camera, the taller girl beams into the camera, and this hints that these girls may be familiar with posing before a camera. One peculiar thing is their attire. The girls' hair seem shiny and well combed, and the taller girl is even wearing a hairband with a large bow, something that any caring mother would love to place on her little girls' head. However, their clothing is strikingly contrasting. The girls' clothing seem as if they were made roughly from potato sacks, or pillowcases. The girls are not wearing any shoes either. Perhaps a sudden famine or economic hardship such as the Great Depression or a war struck the modern town, and their parents could not manage to purchase decent clothing and shoes for the little girls because of the skyrocketing prices or the shortages of clothing and leather. Despite the poor clothing, the children seem to be well washed.

The two photographs are much similar, and different at the same time. Yet they seem to portray something historically significant. In comparison, the emotions arising from the first photograph are disturbance, discomfort, caution, and perhaps even hatred. The two girls are hunched, like a small animal ready to fight back or spring away. Also, the angle of the photograph suggest that the photographer did not kneel or lower the posture while taking the photograph, so he must have been standing tall while taking the photograph. That may have added to the girls' fear. Their expressions are much weary. Perhaps the photographer did not speak in a language that the little girls understood, or he didn't even ask for consent to take the picture. The emotions conveyed from the second photograph are joy and pure surprise. The two girls seem pleasantly surprised. Judging by the angle of the photograph, the photographer had knelt in front of the girls to take the girls, lessening the vigilance of the girls. The photograph may have been taken by the girls' relative or even their parents.

A photograph is a truly amazing thing, for it clearly and evidently captures the moment that had once actually existed. It cannot be distorted, and no parts are left out, and the exact expressions, weather, posture, and the details of the background add to the overall impression and significance of the photograph. Appreciating these minute details of the photograph allow us to interpret the lives and the moments that the subjects of these photographs had once lived, and what we have not seen with our actual eyes.

Final essay/201100316 Kim Nam Hye/ Thu 1 pm

The two Buddies in different scene

Can you remember your childhood? How do you feel when you see old pictures of your time as a boy or a girl? When you see your old picture, you show various looks – happy or sad, smiling or crying. Here we have two pictures in which you can see two girls. Both image have the main center of interest in common, but the mood we feel in the two image is different.

In the left picture, you will see the two girls standing in the middle of the picture. They're grabbing their hands, so they seem to be very close to each other. However, when we pay attention to their facial expression, they look dark, gloomy, serious, and unsatisfactory. A girl in the left even seems to be staring us with having strong dissatisfaction with current situation. She looks tired and weary. Her bare and deep-black foot suggests that she might have walked quite a long way. It looks painful. The other girl in the right also seems very tired and to be scared of something. Except for those two girls, all other components in this picture are out of focus. In the periphery exists nothing special. Background seems to be very meaningless in here. The photographer of this image made those blur in order for us to pay more attention to girls. In the background, some big tree-looking things are standing at the back of girls. This give threatening and bleak impression.

In the right picture, you can also find two girls standing and looking front in the picture. They also grabbing their hands and looked familiar to each other. When we see their facial expressions, we become calm and begin to smile. The overall mood is very positive here. They look satisfied, happy, bright, fun, and playful. They are also in bare foot, but it's very white and clean. So, they don't seem to be exhausted at all. Girls resembled each other, so we can assume that they're siblings. They are wearing a simple dress. They are standing against a wall composed of comfortable looking mortar. The overall focus of this image is very sharp and clear.

Both of the pictures have the same main center of interest; two buddy girls in similar age. However, the overall mood we feel in each picture is completely different. When see the left picture, we feel depressed and negative feelings. Two girls look very gloomy and lifeless. In contrast, in the right picture, we feel very positive and bright feelings. Girls seems to be happy, energetic, have nothing to be worry about. Also, in the left picture the main center of interest is highly stressed. As other components in the picture is blur, we pay full attention to girls in the middle. Their clothes of dotted, and striped pattern also make us pay attention to the center of interest. On the other hand, in the right picture not only main center of interest is highlighted. As well as center of interest, the background is important too. The comfortable looking mortar pattern in the wall gives impression that the standing point of girls are safe place.

When we see the two picture, we can see the similarities and difference at the same time. Both shows us two cute buddies looking us. However, while one gives us negative impressions, the other one left positive impression. Also, one only focus on the main center of interest. But, the other one makes harmony with other components in the picture. As we have seen, similar looking image can be differently interpreted on the point of view of every person.

Children: Our Glorious Future

Children have a magical power to attract people's eyes, making them laugh and release their stress. Also, children make us to draw various emotional feelings than any other subjects of the photograph. This is why there are numerous pictures captured the image of children. There are two pictures below took the picture of two little girls posing in front of the camera. The position, size and periphery are very similar each other, however, the atmosphere of each picture is totally opposite. From the picture, we will be able to derive a conclusion that how light, color tone and facial expression can give critical impact on the moods of photograph.

The picture in the left, there are two little girls, with unique appearances, staring at the camera. What we can first distinguish from the picture is the face of the girls. Girl in the left is making grumpy face, raising her eyes and blowing up her cheek. The other girl's face is also stiff with clearly seen deep wrinkles in the middle of the forehead. Their hair seems very messy and unwashed for a while and the clothes that they're wearing looks worn out. Then our eyes move on to the bottom of the picture, where one girl is in her bare feet and the other one is wearing some dusted boots. In the back, it's not so vivid and blurred but we can assume that the photo was taken in desert area with dry sands covering the floor and some dead woods stuck behind.

The picture in the right also captured two little girls standing together and staring at the camera. The two girls are putting arms each other and beautifully smiling as if they're posing to the camera. They are both in bare feet, but it rather looks like they took off intentionally to play more active. Their hairs are neatly brushed with hairbands on and their dresses seem a bit unclean though still wearable. Since the picture is mainly focused on the figure, there's nothing much to describe about the periphery, we can just assume that it might be taken in urban areas where it has brick houses and floor.

Despite the fact that both pictures are the still cuts of two same aged girls standing together, the mood and the first impression are completely different. Picture in the left seems a bit gloomy because of the children's face and their shabby looks compared to the right one, which children seem joyful and carefree. In addition, even though it's a black and white photo, the left on is overall a grey tone and the color makes the picture look dull. While he right one has more distinctive contrast with more white and black tone. Thus, children's faces having more lights on compared to the periphery of the picture, makes the girls look more cheerful and natural.

In conclusion, when viewers see these two pictures at the same time, they would have different emotions in their minds. The first one can be looked absurd due to the face expression and how they dressed but soon people will feel somewhat depressed and melancholy. In contrast, people will automatically show a little smile as soon as they see the picture in the right. But no matter what feelings that people sensed, these two photographs have its own value and should be treated precious. It's because children are the one of the most valuabl natural resouces in our sociery and they will be the future itself.

Contrasts between the Children and the Backgrounds

June 18, 2015
201002623 Lee Jaehwan
Intermediate English Writing (1)

We all know that children do not—or, cannot—hide their emotions; they smile when they feel good, and frown when they feel bad. The photograph (Picture 1) on the left is about two Pima Indian schoolgirls and was taken allegedly around the year of 1900. The other one on the right (Picture 2,) taken by an unknown photographer in 1910, shows two British girls in Liverpool. Both photographs were taken about the same time, and place two girls in the center of its focus. However, the emotions that each of the pictures convey are quite different mainly because of the facial expressions and the backgrounds.

In Picture 1, there are two Indian (Native American) girls standing. Even though the photograph is black and white, we can notice that they are wearing colorful one-piece clothes that look like what they wear on occasion—one with blue-ish color with white dots and white seams, and the other with vertical stripes of various colors. Their facial expressions seem to be unsatisfied for some reason. The girl on the left gives a very unkind look to the camera, and the other on the right slightly frowns. In addition, the background seems to be a barren, dusty field with some tall stakes stuck on it. We can`t find any vegetation on the background, except the objects far behind that are too blurred to see what they are.

In Picture 2, there are two British girls standing with their backs toward the wall. The girls are wearing very simple-looking clothes without any decorations—one has a dark color while the other is simply white. Also, they are both barefoot. As to their facial expression, both of them smile, showing no unkindness or hostility toward the camera. The background is mostly made up with bricks both on the wall and the ground, which gives us a stark, urban feeling. There is no vegetation on the background either, making it look starker. Furthermore, the wooden (or stone) structure on the right and the top suggests that the kids are very short in height.

Both Pictures 1 and 2 depict the girls of similar ages. All of them are small and do not look like teenagers. The girls in Picture 1 show unkind and, to a certain extent, hostile impressions toward the camera, making the atmosphere very rigid. On the other hand, the girls in Picture 2 make the atmosphere soft by smiling and looking friendly. Interestingly, these emotions give quite contrasts between the atmosphere and the tones of the backgrounds. On the background of Picture 1, it has a bright tone since the ground and the sky provide lightness to it. On the background of Picture 2, contrasting to the girls` smiley faces, it looks very stark and urban without any vegetation. Also, the stony color of the bricks makes the overall tone somewhat darker.

In conclusion, Both photographs are interesting because the expressions of the characters do not match well with the tones and colors of their backgrounds—it is almost ironical. One depicts angry, frowny girls with its background all bright and sunny while the other one features girls brightly smiling with its background so gloomy and stark. This sort of an irony let the viewer wonder about what actually happened to those children and what situations they are under.

The Expression followed by Environment

Watching the emotions expressed in two girls, you can see the girls who are in touch with their emotions. Two girls are staring at something that we can't see from the picture. They look so upset in the faces. On the other picture, the girls are delighted to take a picture. Both photographs, there are two girls on center of the photographs, but facial expressions and moods of the girls are totally different. They reflect their sentiments towards face expressions.

In the first photograph, two girls are in a bleak desert. It looks more lonely and forlorn. Their disheveled hairs show that they lead an itinerant life. They look like to hold back rising anger, and their faces seem to be full of rage. Some sticks are stuck on the sand on the background of the girls. However, these two girls wear dresses which are dotted pattern and stripes. They are holding their hands showing the close-knit relationship between them to overcome the situation. They glare at something fiercely which we cannot see.

In the second picture, those two girls are joyful looks. They pose for a picture by standing nicely. They look happy enough. One girl at the right has a noticeable hair band in her hair. They hide their arms behind the back and gave coy smiles. They wear plain dresses which have no patterns. Their bare foots means they are less affluent.

Both photographs depict children of about the similar age, who are taking a picture. All of them are girls who wear dresses. On the first photograph, it shows a desolate landscape with two girls. They have angry look by staring at something. The second one, those girls are happy due to take a picture. This photograph truly holds shy girls features.

Photographs show many things such as thought, atmosphere and soul. These two photograph show situations that two girls experienced by their face expression. They are of a similar age but they show completely different emotions, anger and happiness. Children are influenced by environments they experienced. These pictures show realities of children's emotions.

Depending upon the situation, children can smile as bright as the sunlight or they can make a long face. Photographs can show us these various expressions of children in different situations. Likewise, those two photographs which were posted on the web page both have children as the central figures but overall atmosphere of the photographs is quite different. Left photograph shows negative feelings of children while the other one reveals brightness of children. Although it seems that children in both photographs are the same age, their feelings and expressions are completely different because of their surroundings.

In the left photograph, there are two girls staring at camera lens. Perhaps the girl on the left side is the older sister of the girl on the right side. Two girls are standing side by side and holding each other's hand. They look a little bit fearful and oppressed. There is no movement in this photograph and the background of the photograph is blurred but we can notice that these two girls are living in the desolate area. The girl on the left side is wearing no shoes. Perhaps they are too poor to buy the shoes of two people. Also, their hairs are messy which suggests that there are no people who take care of these two girls.

In the right photograph, the central figures of the photograph are also two girls. But this time, they are smiling brightly and they seem excited about something. The mood of this photograph is light and expressions of children are positive. In this photograph also, two girls are wearing no shoes but because their hair is not messy this time, it seems that they are not poor but just like to walk with bare feet. Two girls are leaning against the wall which was built of bricks. Perhaps the walls that they are leaning against are the walls of their house.

From both photographs, we can find a few of similarities but there are much more differences. Two photographs have as the central figures two girls but their expressions are contrasted. In left photograph, children are not smiling and they seem depressed by their situation. In right photograph, children are smiling as bright as the sunlight and they look very excited. The background of two photographs is also contrasted. The background of the left photograph is barren while the background of right photograph is full of bricks. So the left photograph shows dark atmosphere but the right photograph reveals joyfulness of children.

Photographs show various feelings of people who were taken of, particularly the feelings of children because children can show their feelings more honestly than adults. In both photographs, children are main center of interest but their surroundings make them reveal different expressions. Kids in the left photograph are showing depressed feelings because of their desolate surroundings while kids in the right photograph are showing their joyfulness and peaceful minds.

Same girls are differed in pictures

Taking a closer look at two photographs, we can see the contrasting expression of four girls in both images. Two of the girls in the first picture look sullen, somewhat dirty and appear to be unfriendly toward the viewer. The other girls in the second picture look carefree and playful. They even give viewer the impression of refreshment. Although these two photographs have two girls as a main center of interest in the foreground, the composition shown in them is in marked contrast. Composition is an arrangement of the elements in a photograph, such as contrast in colors, facial expression and background. Then, let's draw a comparison between these two images by examining these elements in detail by looking at the color contrast in bodily features of the four girls illustrated in the two pictures.

In the first picture, one of the girl on the left side is wearing a dress with a pattern of dots. Her hair is disheveled and looks like it was randomly combed. Her face seem to be tanned and swarthy who had just rolled in mud. Her legs remind us of coal miners whose feet are fumed like a lump of coal. The girl on the right side is wearing a pinstripe dress and charcoal boots that cover one third of her black leggings she's wearing. Her front hair is twisted like a person who has just woken up from a bed with a nightmare. With respect to the facial expression of the two girls in the first photograph, we can notice that two girls are staring glumly at us. These two central figures in the first photograph predominantly look sullen and vigilant. They seem to be wary of the potential viewers (of this image) and have such an unfavorable look on their face. It looks like they are in fear of something because of some secrets they must be hiding behind their back.

In contrast, two girls in the second picture look shiny and cleaner than the girls in the first picture. The girls in the second picture look like they have just come fresh off the bathtub. One of the girls on the left side in the second image is wearing a black dress which has a texture of cushion and warmth. The other girl on the right side of the image is wearing a white dress that has no patterns. These simple looking dresses they are wearing seem to add purity to their appearance as a whole. Their hair also look well-combed, oily and lustrous. With the light shining upon them in flank of the image, their hair even seems to be glossy. From their facial expressions, we can notice that they are carefree and playful. Their friendly smiles give viewer a light impression and liveliness of themselves. They are looking at the potential viewers (of this image) without weariness or dislike.

The two pictures are pale in comparison when it comes to the background as well. In the first picture, the land is sandy and full of specks of dust which has the color of ochre. There seems to be nothing left beside some cutover trees that are blurred behind the two girls. The lumbered trees and some specks of ochre dust give viewers the image of a dessert where there is nothing left that gives off a mood of animation. On the other hand, the background in the second picture stands in contrast to the first one. First, the background object that the two girls in the second photograph recline on is a wall with bricks that are rocky and rectangular. Some wooden planks that prop up the brick wall give viewer a cozy and picturesque image of houses which is filled of warmth and affections.

Two groups of children that are depicted in these two photographs are wearing an expression. In the first picture we feel unclean, uncomfortable and unfavorable mood of the two girls. Yet, we feel purity, at ease and friendly mood of the other two girls in the second picture. The mood of these central figures in both photographs is amplified by color contrast in their bodily features like their faces, hair and skins. The background which captures an image of desert in the first picture highlight the contrasts with the second image which reflect its playful mood. With all these elements in two photos that are harmonized as a single photograph, the kind of expressions we notice from two girls in the first image and the others in the second image is magnified to a remarkable degree of accuracy.

Digging Into Images

Every component of image contains the author's intention. Creators carefully place and arrange each person and item to deliver their thoughts. This means that we need to think about the meanings of position, arrangement, and combination in the image. Here are two black-and-white pictures of children. Each photograph can be interpreted in different meanings by their composition, but both of these can also make viewers feel sorrow.
In the first picture, two girls are placed in the center of the image. They are standing with bare feet in the middle of desert side by side. Dead woods behind them make the desert seem desolate. The looks in the girls' faces are hardened and depressed. They even look like glaring at someone in front of them. As the devastated background is posed behind the main characters, this image shows poor environments which could be home of two kids. It also delivers anger and agony of the girls to viewers.
Second picture captured the scene that two girls standing in front of the wall. They seem like they're outside on the street. Although they are not tidy and stand in their bare feet, the girls are giving a broad grin. The rough wall and street of the background and the children's small naked feet may describe inferior lifestyle of the kids. However, the photographer put smiling girls over that setting and made clear contrast between the circumstances and characters.
Most of the components in two photographs are quite similar. Both of the pictures took little girls with bare feet as main characters. All the children seem to be poor and have inferior living environment. Even though the backgrounds of pictures are not exactly same, but these all are pointing out girls' lives of poverty. The biggest difference between two pictures is the facial expressions of the children. The first one has frowning upset girls and emphasizes sorrow of their lives with them. On the other hand, the kids are smiling and look like happy children. This can be showed as the girls' still having hopes. But at the same time, contrast of the kids and background image can maximize agony of sad reality.
The two pictures have the characters, background images, and overall atmosphere in common. But second photo twisted the meanings and emotions from the image a little with smiling girls. The photographers have described the children who need help for the poor environments by combination and arrangement of each factor of the pictures. So thinking about the meaning of components and their positions would be helpful to understand the images better.

"Emotions Of Life"

The difference of emotions between both photographs show the expressions of life. On both pictures are two girls standing in front of a camera but they have such different faces and the reason is because of their different environments. On the left side picture are two girls living in a poor environment that creates on them sadness on their emotions, and on the picture of the right side picture the girls are looking happy because they have better environment. The moods of both pictures are totally different and also the photographs reflect different feelings.

The children from the left side look careless without any hope. The girls of the picture are looking sad, but more than sad angry because the girls have a long face watching directly to the camera and with the hands behind of her back like insinuating "Don't you come close to me." They do not have any kind of happy emotions of their faces, which is very hard to watch a child with such a serious emotion. And I said that they seem careless because children who have parents won't let them look dirty as on the picture. Also, girls are wearing like old clothes and the background of the picture looks like a rural environment on a bad conditions.

On the right side picture girls are looking happy. The girls of the picture have smiling faces, with the same position as the girls of the left picture, but they seem opened to the person who is taking them the picture. The girls are without shoes and wearing like a very used clothes so they don't look like they are living on a good environment but I could see that these girls are receiving the love of their parents because the girls are combed which this has a big significance on the life a girl. And on the background of the picture seems like a wall of a building so I guess that they are living on a city.

Both photographs create different feelings to the viewers. Both are children from almost the same age, both don't look that they are living on good conditions but their faces shows such a different moods and emotions, like the angry face and the charming face, so these gives different emotions to the viewers. In my case, the left side picture created on me a hopeless atmosphere and unhappy life. But on the contrary, the right side picture created on me energy and lightness, that I could feel the hope on this photograph.

The pictures transmit such a great emotions like how the care of the parents can create such a different life on a child. So the feeling of the images were delightful in the way that I could feel many emotions as love, hope, fear, happiness etc. By the analysis of both pictures and the sending messages of the pictures, create on me and the viewer such an emotional feelings and thinkings.
